Q&A

Q: Are my brushes suitable to use with oil paints, acrylic or other mediums?
A: Yes absolutely. D’Artisan Shoppe specifically selected the most essential number of brushes and popular types of artist brushes to satisfy most media and painting techniques. Traditionally many painters prefer to use natural hog bristles for oil painting as they are sufficiently stiff enough to move thick paint around. We have designed our sets so that oil painter’s needs are catered to specifically selecting for example, a boar bristle fan brush as many painters want one for painting trees, clouds, grasses or other special effects. With the rise in brush making technology however, some artists now find that synthetics are fantastic for oil painting and it’s much easier to clean. Our synthetics are great as they offer the ability to paint using other mediums such as acrylics or watercolor or gouache. We offer several optimal sets that will cater to various budget constraints while offering top professional level quality brushes. This allows you the freedom to choose your media or technique wherever your needs require.

Q: Does your company use natural or synthetic hair for your brushes?
A: D'Artisan Shoppe's brushes come in both natural and synthetic hairs. We offer Chungking bristles only sets, synthetic only sets and our flagship original 15 piece set which consists of both synthetic and natural hog hairs. We also offer our kolinsky sable-synthetic blend in our premier range for the best of both worlds.

Hog hairs are considered to be the best for oil and acrylic painting due to the long, deep flags.  These superior quality bristles are less likely to ‘splay’ or spread with prolong use. Sable brushes are valued for their ability to hold tons of water and also for their spring and snap.

Synthetics are an excellent substitute for sable brushes as it has some unique characteristics in that its retention, snap and spring are all superb. It is versatile and hard wearing, suitable for watercolor, oil and acrylic, glass, fabric, etc and is so much easier to clean.

With our brushes, you get the best of both worlds: handmade brushes with a high degree of spring, precision, and durability.

Q: Are your brushes handmade?
A: Yes they are. We are proud of the fact that our brushes are all meticulously hand made by brush artisans whose specialist knowledge and skills have been passed down the generations. We source and use only the finest materials to meet our exacting standards from the quality of our bristles right down to the hand-picked kiln-dried birch hardwood for our handles. Our family run business endeavors to offer you top quality products at outstanding value for money while striving to keep our traditions alive. With proper care, your paint brushes will last a lifetime.

Q: What is the best type of brush to use for painting?
A: This depends on many factors such as your style of painting, your medium, what you want to achieve etc. However, the brush shape does play a role in making your life easier for certain things. For example:
  • Fan brush - perfect to add leaves on trees, hair, clouds and so on;
  • 3/0 or 000 liner/rigger - just right tool for painting tree limbs in winter, thin lines and grasses or fine details;
  • Angle brush - rose petals or leaves;
  • Brights - for short strokes or dry brushing;
  • Wide/Wash – saves you heaps of time by quickly blocking in large areas of paint or your first washes of color.
That’s why we’ve carefully chosen the most essential brushes in each set that would fit the requirements of many artists. Our range has all of the above plus your flats, rounds, and filbert brushes to round up the selection. While we believe these are the best starter set especially for the serious beginner or aspiring student artist, many seasoned artists would love the sets in their repertoire due to the value and performance too.

Q: How do I clean my brushes?
A: After you have completed your painting session, rinse your art brushes in water (for watercolors or acrylics) or the turpentine or thinners you've just been using, for oils. Most of the pigments will come off from this. Then use a suitable soap-type cleaner to get them really clean and free of lingering paint.
